About our school
S.N. Réalt na Mara joined the Modern Languages in Primary School Initiative (MLPSI) in 2007 and since then the pupils of 5th and 6th Classes have been given the opportunity to learn the French language and to learn about French customs and culture. Our Deputy Principal Ms. Catherine Murphy teaches the senior pupils French for 1 hour each week.
Aims of the MLPSI
As agreed at its launch in 1998, the Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative aims to introduce and support modern languages at primary level in Ireland. It hopes to create a positive attitude towards language learning, to include a wide variety of schools and to facilitate and support a diversified range of languages - Italian, Spanish, German and French. The MLPSI aims to provide:
a comprehensive range of appropriate language-specific and generic language learning resources.
Arising from budget cuts in December 2011, the Department of Education and Skills decided to discontinue the Modern Language in Primary Schools Initiative in primary schools, howeverthe BoM of S.N. Réalt na Mara have decided to support our French programme for pupils in 5th & 6th Classes.
