Discover Primary Science

Projects > Science

Discover Primary Science is a flagship project run by the Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) awareness programme. DSE is managed by Forfás on behalf of the Office of Science & Technology at the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment. The programme aims to develop creativity in our children, show them how important science is to our everyday lives and more importantly how much fun it can be! It also supports teachers in delivering the Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE) curriculum.

The Awards for Excellence Scheme were first introduced in 2004. Schools must carry out a series of science investigations and experiments and schools who achieve the required standard can publicly display a specially designed plaque as a mark of their achievement. They can then build on this achievement from year to year, as they continue to participate in the programme. Réalt na Mara has received eight
Awards of Science excellence to date: 2004/2005, 2005/2006, 2006/2007,2007/2008, 2008/2009 and in 2009/2010, we were awarded our first Award of Science and Maths Excellence. This was the first year that Maths has been included as one of the criteria for the award. We were awarded further Awards of Science and Maths Excellence in 2010/2011 ,2011/2012, 2013/2014, 2014/2015.

This past academic year
2015/2016 , we received another award of Science and Maths Excellence, much to the delight of all at Réalt na Mara

The pupils of Réalt na Mara have completed many activities as part of their project work for the Science and Maths Excellence Award. Over the last few years pupils have also participated in the K'nex Engineering Challenge in conjunction with the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. In 2009 our Fourth Class pupils under the guidance of their teacher Ms. Fallon, reached the National Finals of the Experience Engineering Competition which was held at Dublin City University. Their project on the Wheelchair was awarded second place and two of our Fourth Class pupils, Ethan Henry and Mark Muldoon were awarded first place in the Knex Challenge for their model of the Da Vinci medical robot.

As part of their prize, Fourth Class won Science Workshops with scientist and RTÉ's science presenter on Kazoo, Ms. Sue McGrath.

We really enjoyed all the fun experiments and we got a chance to try out lots of different activities.

Fourth Class pupils reached the
National Finals of the 2010 'Xperience Engineering Project. This was the second consecutive year that pupils from Réalt na Mara, under the direction of Ms. Fallon, have reached the National Finals.

Following on from our Science Excellence awards our school has been invited to exhibit examples of work over the last few years as part of Science Week Ireland at I.T. Sligo. This school year pupils from 1st - 6th Classes exhibited some of their science work at the Science Fair on Sunday, 8th November.
